The design cracked or peeled after a few washes. What went wrong?

If you see cracking or peeling after washing, it indicates the transfer wasn’t fully bonded as it should be. Some likely causes:

  • Under-pressing: The most common reason is not enough heat/time/pressure during application. This can cause only a partial bond, and after washing, parts of the print lift or crack. The fix is preventative – next time, press a bit hotter or longer, and definitely do the post-press. Cracking especially suggests maybe the adhesive didn’t melt uniformly (so edges of a design might crack off).
  • No post-press: If the second press wasn’t done, the print is more vulnerable. We’ve seen cases where skipping the final press leads to early cracking after washing. Always do that finishing press to “seal” it.
  • High-heat wash or dry: If the garment was washed in hot water or tumble dried on high heat, that can shorten the print’s life. DTF is durable but not invincible – excessive heat (like 60°C wash or a hot dryer) can weaken the adhesive over time, leading to cracks or peels. Stick to cold wash, low heat dry as recommended.
  • Fabric stretch: Did the garment get significantly stretched (either while wearing or perhaps during washing)? DTF has good stretch, but if, say, someone really yanked the fabric or it’s a very stretchy material, any transfer can crack under extreme strain. If you need a print on super stretchy activewear, let us know – we might adjust pressing technique.

Remedy: Unfortunately, once a print has cracked or peeled, you can’t fully restore it. Minor lifting edges can sometimes be re-pressed: you can try placing parchment over and pressing again to see if lifted parts readhere (this works only if the adhesive is still mostly there and just lifted – it won’t fix a fully washed-off piece). For cracks, pressing might help flatten them, but they’ll still be visible lines.

For future prevention, double down on correct press settings and gentle wash practices. If you consistently see issues, talk to us – it’s not normal if everything is done right. Our prints should stay intact wash after wash. We’ll help figure it out.

Also, keep in mind some tiny hairline cracks might appear in very large solid print areas over many washes – that’s somewhat natural as the print ages (even screen print can do that). But chunks falling off is not normal early on.
