If you experience issues with the transfer not adhering properly (for example, parts of the design stay on the film or peel up after pressing), it usually comes down to one of a few common factors. Here’s a troubleshooting checklist:
- Insufficient heat or short press time: Double-check your press temperature with a thermometer. If it was too low, the adhesive might not have melted completely. Try pressing again at a slightly higher temp or a few seconds longer. With an iron, definitely press longer or incrementally increase the heat.
- Not enough pressure: DTF needs firm pressure. If using a heat press, ensure it’s providing good pressure on the area (if you have a press with an uneven platen or a thick seam under the print area, that can reduce effective pressure – try using a pressing pillow or adjusting placement). With an iron, press down as hard as you safely can. Lack of pressure is a top culprit for edges not sticking.
- Peeling too soon: If you peeled the film while it was hot or very warm, some parts may not have set. In that case, lay the film back down, wait until completely cool, and press again for a few more seconds, then peel cold. Always peel slowly – rushing can sometimes rip up bits that actually were adhered, especially thin lines.
- Moisture or sizing in fabric: Did you pre-press the garment? If not, moisture in the fabric (or a wrinkle) could cause incomplete adhesion. Always pre-press for 5 seconds to get the area dry and flat. If a garment has heavy sizing (starch) or a waterproof coating, that could interfere – most standard tees don’t, but something like a brand new hoodie might have a coating. The solution is usually just a longer press to drive out any finish and let the adhesive penetrate.
- Transfer stored improperly: If the transfer sheet was old or exposed to humidity for a long time, the adhesive might have degraded. This is less common, but if you’re using a transfer that’s many months old, consider that as a factor. Our fresh prints shouldn’t have this problem.
- Garment incompatibility: Rarely, a certain fabric might be tricky (e.g., nylon with a certain treatment). If everything was done right and it still won’t stick, the fabric might need a different approach (lower temp, special adhesive). Contact us in that case.
Solutions: The good news is DTF transfers can be re-pressed multiple times without damaging them. So if something didn’t transfer, you can try again. Place the film back, cover with parchment, and press again – maybe add 10°C more and a few seconds. Increase pressure if possible. Often this will salvage the situation. If a tiny detail didn’t stick, sometimes using a small iron (like a craft iron) on that spot can fix it.
If after troubleshooting you’re still having problems, stop and reach out to us. We’ll ask for your process details (temp, time, etc.) and help identify the issue. We may determine the transfer was faulty (very unlikely but possible) – in which case we’d replace it – or pinpoint the application issue and guide you to resolve it. We’re here to ensure you get a successful press.
